'Sports'
The 5th and 6th class boys recently participated in a blitz in Tinahely. They had three tough, sporting games against the hosts, Kilcommon and Redcross. After three titanic battles our boys came out on top and in doing so qualified for the County Final. This is to take place in the county grounds in Aughrim in May. Be sure to get out and give your support. The team included: Brandon Doyle, Ethan O’Neill, Dale Fluskey, Aidan Murray, Aaron Tuke, Liam Dickenson, Mark Byrne, Eoin Hayes, Gary O’ Connor, David O’ Connor, Dean Carter and Zach Wolohan.
Well done to all involved.

So far this year the school has had two big sporting events; Elev8 and Relays. Three 5th class pupils took part in a show called Elev8 which is broadcasted on RTE. This was held in Clara Lara Fun Park. There was an obstacle course in the first round; we came first which helped us to get through to the semi-finals. However, we came second and didn’t get through.
The tasks in Elev8 were quite easy. In the first round there was archery, scooters and an anagram. Orlaith completed the anagram, Ethan did the archery and Dale did the scooters. When we were finished we received a special mug and a stress ball.
In the relays there were teams from all over Wicklow. The runners who qualified from 5th class were Dale, Ethan, David, Michael, Eoin H, Eoin L, Oisin, Mark and Zach. The girls’ team was Orlaith, Lucy, Alana and Rebecca. The girls came 5th and the boys came 4th and 7th respectively. The 3rd class boys won bronze in their race.

Many students in 5th and 6th Class are members of St. Patrick’s A.F.C. who were very successful this year. They won the Under 12 Division 2 competition and won a shield.

The team
Some of the boys from 3rd to 6th class recently participated in a GAA blitz in Aughrim. The boys were amazing and won all four of their matches. The team included: Ethan O’Neill, Dale Fluskey, Aidan Murray, Cian O ‘Hara, Mikey Fahy, Seán Dunne, Luke O ‘ Neill, Aaron Bolger, Hayden O’ Neill, Frank Redmond, Cathal Hendley, Andrew Doyle, Cormac O’ Brien and Jason Kinsella.

4th and 5th class
GAA lessons have begun for the Senior classes, with students from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes learning hurling and football skills. The students are really enjoying the active lessons given by Enen Glynn.

Kirsty Hughes and Luke Kearney were the recipients of the Sports Girl and Sports Boy prizes for 2010. Congratulations to Kirsty Hughes and Luke Kearney for being great sports all year!. They really deserve the prizes and we are all very happy for them!!!!

On Tuesday 23rd of May, our school gaelic football team travelled to Pearse Park in Arklow to take part in a 9 a side blitz. We played 3 matches in total winning 2 out of 3. All players involved put in a great performance and did the school proud. The team was as follows Hayden O’Neill,Frank Redmond,Mikey Fahy,Shaun Dunne, Andrew Doyle,Luke Kearney,Cathal Hendley,Eric O’Toole,Cormac O’Brien and super subs Cian O’Hara and Aidan Murray. A great day was had by all and well done to everybody.

Avoca School is happy to announce that we have a new basketball court and we are extremely happy with the way that it has turned out. Each and every break time the court is full with children playing basketball matches. The court is great fun for the whole school. It is great to have a real basketball court in our school especially for our yearly basketball tournaments. Big thanks to Ms Brennan and all the people who worked hard on it.
