'Projects'

Fifth Class recently undertook a project for Engineer’s Week. They were given a week to design and build a bridge using recyclable materials. They could base their designs on any of the bridges we studied ( Beam Bridge, Suspension Bridge, Arch Bridge etc) or a combination of them. The children were also required to keep a log of the work they carried out each night as well as submit two detailed plans of their design.

Paige has aged overnight! Paige won with the best make up
Every one dressed on Friday 26thOctober, our last day of term. People dressed up as pirates, ghosts, zombies, werewolf, babies and some people even dressed up as sacks of coal! There was an abundance of great costumes at the dress up. We had competitions to see ‘witch’ costume was the best.
There were prizes for the winner of each of the three categories; best homemade costume, the scariest costume and the most topical costume. There were also awards for best make-up! Some of the games we played were Pumpkin Targets, Pass the Apple, Eye Ball Hunt and Mask Making. We would like to thank all of the teachers for this wonderful day.

Scariest girl in the school

5th and 6th class carried out a project about the village of Avoca. Some students conducted interviews with the older members of the community and some carried out research on historical features of the area. We learned the origins of the name of Avoca and about the mines and the Handweavers. Some students learned about the Mottee Stone, the churches and Ballykissangel.

From the interviews, we learned about the shops that used to be in the area, how the landscape has changed, where people were employed and much more.

Projects
My Favourite Pet
Senior Infants and 1st class did a project called “ My favourite pets” . Dogs were the most popular.

The Celts
In January 4th and 5th class did a project called “The Celts” . Each project was made by a group of 3 or 4 students. The winning project was made by Sarah Shortall, Aine Roche, Olivia Sheehy and Mikey Fahy.

Italy
In March 4th and 5th class did a project on Italy. Each project was made by 3 or 4 students as well. The winning project was made by Jessica Heffernan, Luke O’Neill, Samuel Arslan and Sinead Keogh.

Egypt
In the month of February, 6th and 5th class each did a solo project on Ancient Egypt. Everybody had something different and they all turned out beautifully. Some students wrote about Tutankhamun. There were also projects about mummies, ancient Egyptian pharaohs, pyramids, hieroglyphs and much more. Everybody said they enjoyed it.



The Titanic
From 10th March to 13th April Luke Higashikawa was working on his own model of the Titanic. He made it out of cardboard, Sellotape, paint and plaster. It is 1m 50cm long and 26cm wide. It is black, red, white and yellow.

Australia
4th and 5th class did a project on Australia . They did some projects about cities and building such as Sydney and the Sydney Opera House .
They also based their projects on animals from Australia. As you would think kangaroos and were the most popular. FUN FACT: Did you know? Baby kangaroos are called joeys .
