5th Class Design a Bridge Project

photo 1

Fifth Class recently undertook a project for Engineer’s Week. They were given a week to design and build a bridge using recyclable materials. They could base their designs on any of the bridges we studied ( Beam Bridge, Suspension Bridge, Arch Bridge etc) or a combination of them. The children were also required to keep a log of the work they carried out each night as well as submit two detailed plans of their design.

Have a look below to see the wonderful results. They are currently on display outside our classroom. Pop in and have a look!

Paige has aged overnight!

Paige has aged overnight! Paige won with the best make up

Every one dressed on Friday 26thOctober, our last day of term. People dressed up as pirates, ghosts, zombies, werewolf, babies and some people even dressed up as sacks of coal! There was an abundance of great costumes at the dress up. We had competitions to see ‘witch’ costume was the best.

There were prizes for the winner of each of the three categories; best homemade costume, the scariest costume and the most topical costume. There were also awards for best make-up! Some of the games we played were Pumpkin Targets, Pass the Apple, Eye Ball Hunt and Mask Making. We would like to thank all of the teachers for this wonderful day.

Avoca through the years

5th and 6th class carried out a project about the village of Avoca. Some students conducted interviews with the older members of the community and some carried out research on historical features of the area. We learned the origins of the name of Avoca and about the mines and the Handweavers. Some students learned about the Mottee Stone, the churches and Ballykissangel.

Robyn Smith with her project

From the interviews, we learned about the shops that used to be in the area, how the landscape has changed, where people were employed and much more.
