About Our School
In Avoca School there is a tradition of helping local charities through fundraising.
Our fundraising takes place in a special way. Each year, in the summer term, sixth class students take full responsibility for organising a super cake sale.
The students first make presentations to the class to decide what the chosen charity should be. In the past, worthy charities such as : Crumlin Children's Hospital, Simon, National Rehabilitation Hospital, APA, GOAL, Medicine Sans Frontiers and the local Special Olympics club have been the beneficiaries of the annual cake sale. The school bursary fund also receives a portion of the proceeds.
When the charity has been selected the class then divide out the tasks; cashiers, cleaners, shoppers, tea makers, decorators, cake collectors, advertisers, hosts and hostesses. Then they set the date and advertise.
As well as cake stalls, they have a variety of other amusements such as "Guess the doll's name", "How many sweets in the jar?", a raffle, face painting and of course a café area for the grown ups.
Each year the boys and girls worry unnecessarily, because on the big day the school transforms into a wonderland of cakes and festivity. Early in the morning families arrive laden with delicious goodies. Then in the afternoon they return with visitors to participate generously in the party.
The cake sale is a "win/win" situation. Sixth class acquire invaluable skills, the students learn about local charities, the school and village community enjoy a fun afternoon together, but most importantly a worthy cause receives a valuable donation which is often in excess of one thousand euro.
